Hi Friend!
One of the questions I get asked the most is about
how to build a list...
Here's my QUICK plan for building a list at no cost.
Join Twitter. It costs nothing to join and Twitter is one
of the fastest-growing, easiest-to-use social networks on
the planet today. And social networking is THE way to
quickly build a profitable online business without spending
one thin DIME.
Here's how you do it:
Go to www.twitter.com and sign up for a free account. You
will be given the opportunity, when you sign up, to set up
your Twitter profile. This is easy, too. Twitter only
allows a few lines of text about you. Just put in something
like, "Providing marketing services to online and offline
businesses" as your profile, if you wish. Or whatever it is
that you've set out to do with your business.
But, although you can select ANY name you wish as your
Twitter name, ALWAYS include your full name and
the name of your company in your Twitter profile.
Also upload a small digital photo of yourself or of a
graphic or cartoon or something that will represent you.
This photo will appear alongside any "tweets" (posts) that
you put on Twitter, so put something up there that's easily
identifiable with you.
Then—follow @kristisayles
After you've signed up, you can go to
http://getresponse.com/click.html?x=a62a&lc=XzVh&mc=3&s=iirFT&y=N& and click on the "follow"
button below my image to follow me. Then—click on my
picture to go to my profile page. On the right side of the
screen, notice the list of people who are following me and
another list of the people I'm following.
First, I recommend you go through the list of people I'm
following. Click on their pictures and check out their
profiles. Read some of their posts that also show on that
page. Look at the total number of people THEY are following
and especially the number following them. A high number of
followers inidicates this is a good possible addition to
the list of people you're following. If you decide to
follow them—click the FOLLOW button, then go back to my
profile and do it again.
When you get done following everyone I follow—check out
the folks who follow me. Then start looking into who is
following the people you're following and who is following
them and so on.
You can keep doing this as long as you have the time and
patience to keep it up. Soon, you'll be following 100-200
people. That's a good start.
Now watch your own home page. You'll now see messages
appear that have been posted by the people you're
following. SOME people you follow will automatically follow
you, but others (the majority) won't.
No big deal.
Next—COMMENT on some of the posts you see from people
you're following. Offer useful insight to what they've
posted. You comment by hitting the "repoy" link inside
their tweet—to the left of the box where their tweet
appears.
If someone posts something truly profound, "re-tweet" it.
Re-tweeting is simply copying what someone posted into the
box where YOU post. Add the person's name who originally
posted the comment and make sure you add "@" in front of
their name. Make sure this is the FIRST THING in your post.
This will ensure that the original poster will see your
"re-tweet."
Re-tweeting is a way of telling someone you liked their
tweet so much you wanted to make sure everyone following
YOU saw it. This will usually make the person you've
re-tweeted aware of youu.
Sometimes, it will make them decide to follow you.
When you comment on someone else's tweet—do it by hitting
REPLY inside their tweet. Make your comment really useful
and add to the conversation and THEY might RETWEET your
comment or reply to your reply. Then, everyone following
THEM will see YOU!
The idea is to work and build a following by providing fun,
useful, informative information. Be VERY CAREFUL about
posting blatant ads. Twitter is NOT a classified
advertising site. It's a SOCIAL networking site with the
emphasis on SOCIAL.
However—once you have a list of people following you, and
those people have lists, it's very easy, in between the
purely informative or fun tweets, to now and then post
tweets that you've updated your blog—with a link to the
blog. Or that you plan to conduct a teleseminar or webinar.
And post a link to sign up for the event. Or that you've
just unveiled an exciting new service or product they need
to look at, along with the link to check it out.
Often, it's best to do this ASKING for people's feedback
after they check it out. Their feedback, of course, will
come in as public tweets others see.
When you do post an announcement, always add this at the
end of your tweet: "Please Retweet." Or, at least, "Please
RT"
Then, people who follow you will often re-tweet your tweet,
so your message reaches THEIR lists, too.
This is a way to turn 200 followers into a list of 2,000
that you can reach easily whenever you need to announce a
new blog post or teleseminar.
Then you can SELL on the blog or during the teleseminar or
on the sales page you send your followers to check out.
This is an oversimplification. It's impossible to tell you
EVERYTHING about Twitter in this one article. But, do what
I've suggested and you'll have made a solid start.
Twitter is fun. It doesn't require a lot of upkeep or work
like Facebook or Myspace do. And everyone's limited to
posting comments that are no more than 140 characters in
length.
This is deceptive. Shorter is NOT always easier. As an
author, I can tell you—it's usually tougher to come up
with a tight, informative or entertaining message in just
140 characters. But—if you read the tweets on Twitter a
bit, you'll see that it CAN be done and it's fun trying!
It's worth the effort, too, because your messages DO get
through.
Give it a shot! Follow me! I'll keep you updated on things
through Twitter almost daily. And I'll follow you—if you
give me a good reason to, by following what I've told you
to do here!
Hugs,
Kristi
PS If this post looks familiar, it's because I
borrowed the ideas from my buddy, Alan Bechtold.
He's just ONE of the amazing marketers coming to the
Music City Conference in Nashville this June! Check it out
here! The speaker line-up is amazing!

PPS As an update, my smartauthor.com stuff is still not
all up-I had to move my server on that one. I'm sorry
for any inconvenience. If you find a link somewhere that
doesn't work, click reply to this email and let me know
and I'll send the info on it for you. :)
